Paul's School of Motoring has been operating since 2004, and we are based in Cove, Farnborough.

Prior to this I taught for a large national school. I am very  enthusiastic and passionate about my job. I believe it is important to enjoy your driving and when you have passed your test you leave me as a confident, considerate, and safe driver.

Driving should be an enjoyable experience and not just getting from A to B.

We will not just teach you how to pass the test, each person is different, therefore each lesson is different.

Lessons are structured to meet each individual's needs.

We offer driving lessons in a manual car, offering Intensive courses, Pass plus, Motorway refresher courses, Night time driving and all weather driving.

Nervous pupils particularly welcome.

Being an independent driving school we adapt lessons to suit your needs.

We offer lessons within approximately ten miles of Farnborough.

Why this particular car?

Through experience this car has proved very popular with past pupils due to its comfort and manoeuvrability.
Being a diesel vehicle, the clutch control is easier to operate during the early stages of learning to drive.
Also, being a modern car it has a six speed gear box, so the car gives a smoother, more forgiving drive.

In Car Camera.

We have recently introduced using BlackVue cameras during the driving lessons.
We are one of only a few driving schools in the area using this technology.
The system records where the car is travelling  and also the interior of the car focusing on the pupil's driving. Other data is gathered via GPS such as speed and position.
If a fault is made the pupil can watch the recording back assisting them to understand and correct the fault.

FAQ

FAQ

What kind of car will I be learning in?
I currently teach in a Mini Countryman D

What car will I take my test in?
You can take your test in any car, providing head restraints, seatbelts and extra mirrors are fitted, however it is always best to take the test in the car you learn in.

How much will it cost me?
Prices vary depending if you pay per lesson, or use the block booking discounts, please check the courses section for more details.

How many lessons will I need?
Research by the DSA shows that the current average amount of lessons required is 42 with a further 22 hours of private practice to pass. Remember this is only an average, the majority pass in fewer lessons. During your training you will be advised of the likely number of lessons required.

Do you do intensive courses?
Yes as long as my diary allows!

Yes I am qualified to teach Pass Plus and also registered on Hampshire's Pass Plus scheme.

Can I have lessons at the weekends?
Obviously there is limited availability at weekends, but I do endeavour to work at least one if not both weekend
mornings.

I've heard I should book my test for the beginning of the week as the examiners have limited amount of passes, is that true?

There is no evidence to suggest that this is true, and brings up a good point that a lot of people hear a lot of things regarding driving lessons/tests, most of which are not true, which makes it all the more important to take your training with a Government Approved Driving Instructor, such as myself as we will provide you with the facts and skills required to pass your test.

Will you be able to provide me with any help/advice in order to pass my theory test?
Yes as well as covering areas in the driving lesson I can also provide you with software to help.

Is it a good idea to practice with family between lessons?
Extra practice can always help providing it is structured and done in the right way, I can provide notes to give to your family to assist with your practice between lessons.

I have already failed my test before, would changing instructors help me pass?

Sometimes a different set of eyes can give a different persspective of possible problems, so a change can sometimes help.

Sometimes I might need to be picked up from work or college, is this okay?
This is fine as long as I have prior notice and am able to arrange my diary accordingly.

I need to cancel my lesson, will I still be charged?
Under my terms and conditions a minimum of 24 hours notice is needed, however there are some circumstances to which the 24 hour notice may be waived.

The Theory Test

To be able to obtain a full Driver's Licence you are required to pass the DSA theory test (including hazard perception) and a practical driving test.
The theory test is in two parts. The theory element covers areas such as the Highway Code with 50 multiple choice questions from which you are required to achieve a minimum of 43 correct answers.
The hazard perception test is held at the same time as the theory. It is delivered on a computer and you respond by clicking on the mouse. You will be shown a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will show two developing hazards.
Both elements must be passed at the same time to achieve the certificate.  You cannot apply for your practical test until this has been achieved.

The Practical Test

The driving test is straightforward and has been designed to see if you can drive safely in different road conditions.
Know your Highway Code and demonstrate this through your driving.
After meeting the examiner you will carry out an eye test check.
You will then be asked two questions about vehicle checks (show and tell).
You will be asked to drive for about 40 minutes during which you will be examined on general driving and the ability to reverse the car safely.
You may be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.
You must carry out the test without making more than 15 driving faults and making no serious or dangerous faults.

Independent Driving

The Practical test will include approximately 10 minutes

of independent driving.
This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while

making decisions independently.
You will have to drive by either following:-
Traffic signs
Directions
A combination of both.
It does not matter if you don't remember every direction or if

you go the wrong way.
Independent driving is not a test of orientation and navigation
skills.
Driving independently means making your own decisions,

this includes deciding when it is safe to ask for confirmation

about where you're going.
