The Theory Test

To be able to obtain a full Driver's Licence you are required to pass the DSA Theory test (including Hazard Perception) and a practical driving test.

The Theory test is in two parts. The Theory element covers areas such as the Highway Code with 50 multiple choice questions from which you are required to achieve a minimum of 43 correct answers.

The Hazard Perception test is held at the same time as the Theory. It is delivered on a computer and you respond by clicking on the mouse. You will be shown a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will show two developing hazards.

Both elements must be passed at the same time to achieve the certificate.  You cannot apply for your practical test until this has been achieved.

The Practical Test

The driving test is straightforward and has been designed to see if you can drive safely in different road conditions .

Know your Highway Code and demonstrate this through your driving.

After meeting the examiner you will carry out an eye test check.

You will then be asked two questions about vehicle checks (show and tell).

You will be asked to drive for about 40 minutes during which you will be examined on general driving and the ability to reverse the car safely.

You may be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

You must carry out the test without making more than 15 driving faults and making no serious or dangerous faults.

 Independent Driving

The Practical test will include approximately 10 minutes of independent driving.

This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently.

You will have to drive by either following:

Traffic signs

Directions

A combination of both.

It does not matter if you don't remember every direction or if you go the wrong way.

Independent driving is not a test of orientation and navigation skills.

Driving independently means making your own decisions, this includes deciding when it is safe to ask for confirmation about where you're going.
